The Most Romantic Cottage in the World

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Don Doman A friend of mine kept inviting my wife and I to dinner. They even said we could stay the night in their guest cottage. Finally, we found a date that worked. We went for dinner and stayed the night. It will live in memory for the rest of my life. Jim and Susan had been to our home for dinner and to one of our anniversary parties, but we had never been to their place. We live in Tacoma and they live in West Seattle. That’s probably a distance of only 35 miles or so. Depending upon traffic it takes around forty-five minutes to get there. With a full meal and drinks I hate to drive, however, so the invitation to stay the night was attractive. Their home is on the water. Susan has done a fantastic job with their home. The house surrounded by trees looks like a little gem from a fairy tale. It is picture perfect. The guesthouse was even more perfect. The home faces Puget Sound. In the background are the Olympic Mountains. We had dinner near the beach where Jim had a barbeque and patio built. It was a nice dinner. We laughed and talked for hours. But I don’t remember the other couple at all, what I remember is the guesthouse. The guesthouse had been a dilapidated boat-house with concrete walls and no roof. Susan transformed it. Even the littlest details were made absolutely perfect. The hinges on the door were handmade in a Bavarian style at a local forge. The green slate floor had cozy rugs and a drain for the shower. The crawl-up-into-bed, which dominated the floor space, looked like something out of the Three Bears . . . and with goose-down comforters, it was “just right.” The front of the old boat-house had been replaced with a picture window. Jim and Susan had scoured the beach for the rocks that formed the foundation for the window. Each rock was lovingly cemented in place. The stone wall rose about two feet where it met the window casing. A small stereo played Andrea Bocelli all night as the waves gently washed against the stones. And in the morning, ah . . . in the morning. As the sun rose, it lit up the peaks of the Olympic Mountains. How Susan did it, I’ll never know, but the highest peak in the range was dead center in the picture window. As the sun rose higher it lit up the water view. From bed all you can see is Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. We stayed in bed wrapped in each other’s arms listening to the music, the waves, and drinking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. We didn’t want to leave. Two Simple Ways To Avoid A DWI Or DUI Conviction

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Robert Davis Hello, Another loyal reader recently asked me an intriguing question. It’s a question that I had to think about. Not because I did’nt know the answer, but because of possible ethical issues. I email this individual and asked her why she wanted to know this ( yes, a she). She replied, ” I’m a student studing toxicology at a major university. My professor told the class that no one can fool a breath analyzer test”. Well, I decided to answer the question, but with a disclaimer. Drinking while driving is serious. You could kill or severely injure a fellow citizen. So don’t drink and drive. Matter of fact, don’t violate the law at all! Your professor is partially correct, but their is a way to avoid the actual ‘conviction in court’. The analyzer may be correct, but you could convince a judge that the test was wrong. First, in most states, the difference between a DWI and DUI or not the same in most states. In the former, it’s involving alcohol, while in the latter, it’s involving over the counter medications, prescriptions, or any thing that will impair your ability to operate a vehicle. Some states call both DUI. First, let’s deal with your professor. The simple spice called garlic could trick a test. Not a liitle but a large amount. It certainly can reduce the total score on the analyzer. Say for instance that your state law caps a DWI at a score of 0.9. This means that if your score is 0.8 or below, you’re not legally intoxicated. Garlic consumed a few minutes before a test can bring your score down a few points. If you’re driving at 0.9 and ate garlic just before the test, you could clock in at 0.7, which means you tricked it. Now the conviction part. If you were stopped in your vehicle and asked to take a test, and you failed, you will be given a court date, as well as a night or more in jail. When you bond out and appear in court, you could have a defense if you can prove the test was wrong. How? If you were taking any legal presciption containing alcohol or said you had consume something like , well I can’t say that. But it’s something easily available over the counter. My point is that a judge has the power to rule based on intent. A DWI or DUI thrown out of court is not a conviction. I must say this again If you have read any of my articles I never suggest breaking the law. My focus is on those cops who violate the law. I see this article as a debatable subject for the lady who asked the question. She can now go to class and debate her professor (smile) I have learned that life has very few absolutes. Most things have an exception. Finally, I write these articles for information, awareness, and safety. Drive safe! Adding Scent and Color When Making Candles

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Corinne Waldon You have total control over how your candles look and smell. You have a myriad of choices for adding your own colors and scents to produce a candle which is individually yours. Craft shops and candle making suppliers stock scents and dyes made specifically for home-made candles from many different materials, but be sure you know what is flammable when adding things to wax. Adding scents Only add scent to the hot wax after it has been taken away from the heat source. Check for flammability of the scent at a low temperature before adding any essential oils to prevent a dangerous situation. Many of the cheaply made candles you find in discount stores will not use scent added to all the wax, instead topping off the candle at the end with scent added after the bulk of the candle has cooled. If you want a really good quality of scent, add the oils to all the wax you are using when the wax has completely melted. The choice for scent is yours, but some natural scents are stronger than others. Vanilla essence, makes for a strong vanilla scent and is typically the most commonly used fragrance in home candle making. Combinations of other scents can be used to create specialty scents– popular recipes include holiday fragrances pine scent with cinnamon added, or rose cream rose essential oil with vanilla added. You will only need a small amount of scent around half a teaspoon will produce a good clear scent. Where will you be placing your candle? Do you wish a zingy scent for the kitchen? Citrus scents such as orange or lemon are best for this. For an aromatherapy experience, use lavender and geranium, or lilac. For a bedroom candle, use rose oil for sensuality, or eucalyptus for soothing a cold but remember to never leave a candle burning if you are in danger of falling asleep this could lead to a serious risk of house fire. Adding Color You can purchase dye chips at your craft store or candle making supplier. Add a little at a time because you can always add more later but take into consideration that wax changes color as it cools and hardens. Test a small amount of wax on a non-flammable surface to ensure you are getting the shade that you want. You can also add color using liquid dyes, which are simpler and can be dropped into the molten wax with an eye-dropper. Add these once youve poured the candle, and try experimenting with different dyes and cooling times– they can give a wonderful rainbow effect. When adding scent and color, have fun matching the fragrance with the appropriate colors. Corinne Waldon writes articles for Candles-24, a comprehensive candle website. Where To Take Women On Dates

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Nick Shane When you got a number from a really attractive woman and want to organize a date with her, you need to be smart. If you want to GET her, then you can’t just take her out for a drink, a movie or a nice candle-light dinner. Why? Because it doesn’t make her feel that gut level emotion called attraction towards you. You can’t just do what every other guy has done before you. If you do, then you will get what all the other guys she has dated got too: a kiss on the cheek and a new female friend. And we don’t want that to happen at all costs! So, in order to be successful when it comes to the initial date, you need to do something like most men. Don’t spend any money on her…that just shows her that you want to BUY her affection. A very bad idea! It never works. You see, most guys assume they need to take a woman on an expensive and lavish date for her to like you, with candles and moonlight and everything she has seen in the movies. But women don’t get that attraction feeling in their stomach when you do what everybody else does. That’s why she is going on a date with you…to see if you are different! So give her what she wants. So where do you take her? Go to the park, tag her and say “you’re IT” and let her chase you. Go windows shopping and let her decide what would look good on you. Say “Do you think that bikini over there would suit me? Nah … I think I’m just a little but too sexy for that don’t you think so?” *evil grin*. Try stealing something from her like cigarettes, make-up … anything and make her fight for them back. If you are playful about the whole thing and just have fun, she will get attracted to you just like that. Oh, and then, there is tickling. This NEVER fails to attract a girl even more towards you. Don’t ask me why but it NEVER fails, as long as you have built up some attraction already. What about the confidence? Well, you can show her you are confident just by teasing her and jokingly ordering her around. You can show that you make decisions and you aren’t afraid of what she thinks of you. Then there’s the surprise element. Instead of saying “Would you like to go to the park? I know, it doesn’t sound too good but it can be” try saying “Let’s go to the park, I’ll even get you some candy so you don’t have to steal them”. Now I know many of you guys will like the sound of taking a girl to a park because it’s cheap and it’s true. You don’t have to spend a single dime. Does it work? You bet … where do you think I take all my dates? It’s always shopping, then a cup of coffee or the park. Forget the candle-light dinner, the cinema and your regular bar for the first date. Stick to what works and what is best for creating attraction: The city, coffee shops and the park. It never fails. A Bit About Bare Root Roses…

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Gordon Goh Scents from the rose garden filling the air as you walk by… it’s a lovely summer scent that you can enjoy every year. Many gardeners know that the rose is referred to as the queen of all flowers, and you can see the history in the rose by traveling back in time to Europe. The rose is a plant whose scent predominates the historical gardens all over the world. Historical gardens in Europe include the use of Roses, Peonies, Honeysuckle, and a few other strongly scented plants. The rose creates the feeling of royalty, color, and elegance all in the same instant The rose bush is a perennial that will fill your garden space without much added work. In planning a rose garden, you might have the option to plant roses that are bare root. What are bare root roses? Bare root roses are plants that you will dig up from your family or friend’s house and bring back to your own garden. The plant that you dig up without bringing the soil that the plant lived in to your garden is a bare root plant. Here, we are going to discuss more about bare root roses, and how to plant them for your rose garden success. Bringing the bare root plant back from the store, your friends or from your supplier, you should soak your bare root plants in a bucket of water overnight before planting. In planning your rose garden, you can dig your hole for your new plant, loosing the soil where you will place your new rose bush. Using the soil that you loosen in the hole, pile or mound it in the middle of the hole to support the plant during and after planting. Placing your bare root plant in the hole, center it on the mound of dirt and back fill around the plant. Do not pack in the soil, but loosely back fill the soil around the plant to an inch above where planted in the soil before. You can tell how far the plant was in the soil earlier by the green on the stalk of the plant. Water the rose bush once again with ample amounts of water. After watering your rose bush well, cover the soil with mulch to hold moisture. The mulch around the rose should not actually touch the thick stalk of the plant, but instead be a half-inch to an inch from the stalk. Watering your rose bush at least once a week, for the first month after planting, will bring the first breath of success in your new rose garden. Rose Garden Tips… The rose garden ultimately is a get away for you and your thoughts any time of the day. You can plan and create a rose garden of your own that will take away the stress of your day with its beauty. The rose garden that you love and admire so much can be yours if you follow a few easy steps in planning and in raising your roses. If you have never raised roses before, we have a few great tips and ideas lined up for your reference. One important thing to remember is that roses do love the sunshine. In the garden that is full sun areas only, you will have great success in growing roses. If you have a partially shaded area where you want to grow new rose bushes, you may want to consider moving your plants to where your roses will receive at least six hours of sun a day or more. When first planting or transplanting a rose bush, water will be an important factor. You will need to water your roses at least once a week as your rose establishes itself. The soil that you plant your rose in does need to drain well, this is important. The rose bush will not thrive in the area moist all of the time. Refraining from planting your rose in an area that fills with puddles will aid in your successful rose gardening. As your roses grow and change every year, you will need to pick off the dead head flowers. Picking off the flowers that are dead will bring new life to your bush. If you find black spots on the leaves of your rose bush, this will keep your plant from suffering and from any disease from spreading over the entire plant. Treating your plants at the first sign of Japanese beetles is going to save their luscious green leaves from these tiny creatures. In the spring of the year, you will need to prune your rose bush. The blackened portions of your rose bush need pruned away to promote additional new growth over the entire plant. While pruning your plant in the spring season, pull weed starts so that your plant is not in competition for water or soil nutrients over the growing seasons. As you plan your rose garden and begin placement, planting roses of the same color next to each other will enhance the over all look of the rose garden. Using too many flowers in one area though, can make the entire rose garden look more jumbled than a wave of color. One last thing for you to think about when creating and planning a rose garden is to remember to test your soil. Soil testers are widely available and relatively inexpensive. When testing your soil, your pH level is going to be most important for success with roses. A pH level of 5.5 to 6.6 is the ultimate situation for raising a rose garden of your own. The Common Thing That All Aromatherapy Products Share

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Joe Okoro All the aromatherapy oils and scents come from different lands, yet they all have one common but amusing thing in common. You find aromatherapy products from China, India, Africa, and so on. Apart from the common name they all bear as aromatherapy, there is another thing they all have in common. I have discovered that irrespective of the varying cultural lands that aromatherapy originate from, that all the product line have a latin name. Foeniculum Vulgare is the latin name for Fennel Bitter aromatherapy essential oils. Artemisia Pallens is the latin name for Davana oils. Anethum Graveolens is the latin name for Dilly Weed oils. Now wait a minute, let’s analyse a little bit of aromatherapy history and origin. Aromatherapy was spotted in the beginning of the 20th century (early 1900s), yet history has it that the same oils have been in use in other lands. These lands use some of the oils for spiritual and healing purposes. In fact it was even used before Jesus Christ came to the earth. For instance, the Indians were using the oils as an oil for protection during war and in other activities. They believe that whoever wears the oil is protected from unseen spirit forces. Other lands across the globe also have similar uses for this product. For instance the oils were used as a massage therapy, natural medicines and so forth. If you know about aromatherapy, you should know that it includes scented and essential oils. Login to the internet, you will discover a whole array of information on aromatherapy products. Using the right keywords will open your eyes to these details. One special thing about the oil is that the healing characteristics is the scents, aromas, and fragrances that radiates from these oils. Most of the oils are used as mood setters for romance. Once used, it excites the mood, making it affectionate and thus it is ideal for couples to use in their honeymoon periods. This also brings back the romantic sparks in advanced marriages. Thus aromatherapy can find uses in areas of human psychology. Other uses of aromatherapy scented oils is in reduction of stress and its ability for enhancing relaxation. Now going back to the common thing about aromatherapy oils - the latin titles. Aurantifolia Swingle is the latin name for Key Lime oils. This oil is from Mexico and it is used for making perfumes, soaps, and production of toiletries. Trigonella Foenum is the latin name for Fenugreek oils, an Indian plant used in the treatment of boils, coughing, indigestion, inflammatory problems, indigestion, and so on. It is also used by people with low blood pressures to help regulate their blood pressure. I can continue telling you about aromatherapy products that all have their latin names but each of them come from different parts of the world. Is it not amusing to you. Wedding Chapels In Las Vegas

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Peter Emerson Las Vegas, the largest city in Nevada, is famous for its gambling casinos and nightclubs, but also very popular for its wedding chapels. This city is known all across the world for its gorgeous wedding chapels, and hence has couples coming from different parts of the globe to get married. Choosing a wedding chapel in Las Vegas can be a tough task. The selection can vary depending on the taste and budget of the couple. For a more traditional and elegant wedding, the wedding chapels of Bellagio or Paris are very popular. On the other hand, for a tropical-feeling wedding held in a garden gazebo, the wedding chapels of Tropicana are popular. However, Las Vegas is mostly known as the home of wacky weddings, so many chapels provide off-the-wall themed weddings and packages. For example, the happy couple can dress up in a Renaissance period garb in the Excalibur wedding chapel. In Paris, couples get the opportunity to wed at the top of a 50-story replica of the Eiffel Tower. Also, some packages include Elvis weddings and weddings held in helicopters. Some wedding chapels in Las Vegas have maintained a high reputation, such as the Aladdin Hotel and Casino where Elvis and Priscilla Presley were married in an eight-minute wedding ceremony in 1967. Also, the Wee Kirk wedding chapel, which opened in 1940, is an original and historic wedding chapel which has consistently been voted one of the best wedding chapels of Las Vegas. However, whichever wedding chapel in Las Vegas a couple chooses to get married in, they will be left with the memory of a lifetime.
