Introduction to the Brow Lift (Forehead Lift) Procedure

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Daniel Ebroon There are several established methods for performing an eyebrow (also called a forehead) lift. The oldest method is called a coronal brow lift. This form of a brow lift is done by making a very large incision behind the hairline from one side of the head to the other. The forehead and brow are lifted accordingly and the incision is sutured closed. The most important advantage to this form of a brow lift is the fact that the brow can be raised a significant amount by simply removing more and more skin. However, this form of a brow lift also has several very large disadvantages. The surgery is much more expensive than other forms of a brow lift. Also, there is a very large scar hidden behind the hairline in those with abundant hair. Those who do not have thick hair do not hide the incision well. Also, there can be permanent numbness in the scalp region after this form of surgery, as some of the sensory nerves are cut by the surgical technique. Other forms of a brow lift or forehead lift are performed without making such a large incision. One such form of a brow lift is an endoscopic brow lift. This is done by making several small incisions behind the hairline and using a small camera inserted through one of the incisions, the forehead is lifted to a higher point. The advantage of this form of a brow lift is that there is no single large incision. However, the incisions still can be visible if the patient does not have a full head of hair. The technique employs various methods of keeping the forehead in a higher position once it has been lifted through the small incisions. One of these methods is a suturing method that holds the brow and forehead up higher. The other employs a device called an Endotine, which is a fixation device made of a dissolvable material that holds the brow and forehead in its higher position for three to six months before dissolving. The forehead and brow form natural attachments over this period of time that keep the brow in the new higher position. Another method of raising the brows is to do what is called a transblepharoplasty brow lift. This is a method of raising the eyebrows through the upper eyelid incision that is made for a blepharoplasty. Since brow lifts and blepharoplasties are usually performed together, sometimes this means that the brow can be elevated without an additional incision. With this method of a brow lift, the brow and forehead are addressed from the eyelid incisions. They are lifted and raised to a higher position. Just as in the endoscopic forehead lift, the brow and forehead need to be fixated in the new higher position and this can be accomplished either with sutures or with the device called the Endotine. The advantage of this form of a brow lift is that the incisions are minimal. This allows for much faster healing and essentially no visible scars. The disadvantage of this technique is that the eyebrow and forehead may not be able to be elevated as high as with the other forms of a brow lift. In many patients the tail of the brow will descend to a more significant degree than other portions of the eyebrow. There are many patients in which Dr. Ebroon would advise raising the tail of the brow much more than the central portion of the brow or the portion closest to the nose. Raising the tail is helpful because it can give the effects of a brow lift without giving the surprised look that no patient is interested in. The tail of the brow can be lifted with any of the methods outlined above. Usually, after consulting with the patient, your physician might recommend a transblepharoplasty assisted brow lift, perhaps with a single incision in the temple region, to achieve the desired brow position. Brow lifts are an important part of eyelid and upper face rejuvenation. A subtle brow lift can add a tremendous amount to the effects of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty. It can enhance the rejuvenating effects of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty and is therefore a very popular procedure. Some patients prefer to raise the brows non-surgically. This can be done to a small degree with the use of Botox. Botox is a medicine that temporarily relaxes muscles, usually for a period of three months. It is a very popular method to reduce wrinkles between the eyebrows, in the forehead, and in the crows feet areas. Botox can also be used in the tail of the brow to raise the tail of the brow minimally. It has this effect because there are muscles near the eyebrows that both raise the tail of the eyebrow (the frontalis muscle) and muscles that depress the tail of the brow or bring the tail of the brow down (the orbicularis muscle). If Botox is skillfully placed into the orbicularis muscle in the area in which it brings the eyebrow down, this muscle will temporarily be weakened and the muscle that raises the tail of the brow will work unopposed and perform a nonsurgical temporary minimal brow lift. Depending on an individuals personal anatomy and their personal feelings about surgery, the appropriate method can be employed to enhance the brow position and thereby enhance appearance. Crochet A Beautiful Lattice Scarf - Easy Instructions

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

By Jill Wright Check out this easy lattice scarf pattern - it’s so quick and simple you’ll bewanting to make another in no time. It’s easiest to work in a regular acrylic, but of course I had to try something different and opted for 6 ounces of a sport weight chenille instead and a 4mm hook. See a picture of it here. Don’t worry about gauge with this scarf as it’s such an open lacy pattern. This is how I did it…Chain 30.Slip stitch into 10th chain from hook, *chain 5, skip next4 stitches, slip stitch in next chain, repeat from * ending with slip stitch in last chain. Turn. *Chain 5, slip stitch in 3rd chain of each 5 chain space, repeat from * 5 times, chain 3, treble in last stitch. Turn. *Chain 5, slip stitch in 3rd chain of each 5 chain space, repeat from * 5 times ending with slip stitch in last stitch. Turn. Rows 2 and 3 form the pattern repeat. Repeat these rows until your scarf is the length you want, then ending with a row 3 continue as follows… Working across one end of your scarf (4 single crochet,1 X 15 chain twisted tassel,4 single crochet in each 5 chain space) 5 times. Then working down the length of the scarf work 4 single crochet along each treble or 3 chain space skipping over the joins. When you get to the next corner work across the other end of thescarf as row 5. The last edge is worked as row 6, slip stitch to first single crochetand finish off. Only one end to finish off in your lattice scarf pattern - how’s that for convenience? Try different yarns for different looks - cotton, silk, variegated acrylic, you could even try working it in a lighterweight wool and felting it. If you’re using this last option - don’t forget about the shrinkage - it’ll be about 30% with such an open pattern united then kingdom has information same mortgage before rates any outsource way mortgage my processing also bad being credit might loan my mortgage got very another credit with emporia too city his va our mortgage of rates on

How The Right Work Chair Can Prevent Chronic Tension Headaches

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

By Paul Bacho If you suffer from chronic tension headaches, back pain or neck pain, you’re probably aware that poor posture was at least partly responsible. However, did you know the way you sit may have had more to do with your pain than the way you stand? If you’re like most Americans, you spend much of your day seated. That’s because your work station is probably at a computer terminal, assembly line, or desk. Consider, too, that much of your time at home is also spent sitting - either watching T.V., surfing the Internet or reading. As a result, of the 16 hours or so you’re awake, you may well spend 12 or more of them sitting down. Doesn’t it make sense then, that you should concentrate as much on your sitting posture as you do your standing posture? And while standing properly - shoulders rolled back, head up, chest out - is important, the benefits of a good standing posture will be minimal if you slouch all day at your desk. You may be one of many unfortunate workers who are forced to slouch because your work chair won’t adjust to accommodate your body, or because you don’t have your chair adjusted properly. THE DANGERS OF IMPROPER SITTING Three things can happen when you habitually slouch for long periods every day. They’re all bad: * stiffness and pain in your muscles, connective tissue and joints * restricted breathing * postural deformities STIFFNESS AND PAIN Problems related to inappropriate seating are cumulative. The first noticeable symptom is usually stiffness and pain in your low back, upper back or neck. These can lead to chronic tension headaches, back aches, and muscle spasms or a restriction of circulation in your legs. As a result of sitting slouched over all the time, other body segments begin to break down because when one part of the body is out of alignment, it’ll have an effect on the structures above and below it. For example, if you habitually sit slumped over you’re not only at risk for back and neck pain, but also for repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. RESTRICTED BREATHING When you’re sitting upright, you should have good tone in your lower abdominal muscles so your diaphragm is in its proper, raised position. This is important for optimal breathing. But when you slump in your seat, your lower abdominal muscles relax and your diaphragm lowers. This forces you to breath from the upper chest instead of from the diaphragm. As a result of decreased support from a relaxed lower abdominal wall, together with a lowering of your diaphragm, your abdominal organs are forced downward, which restricts your breathing. POSTURAL DEFORMITIES If you’re a woman, the resulting pressure in your pelvis from slouching all day for prolonged periods of time can be an overlooked cause of back, pelvic and menstrual pain. And - particularly if you’re a woman - you risk skeletal deformities if your poor seating posture is not corrected. Often, when people think of a “round-back” posture, they usually associate it with a post-menapausal woman who’s already had osteoporosis. However, many pre-menopausal women have rounded backs that are caused by the way they sit all day. HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU’RE SEATED PROPERLY Here’s a checklist you can use that will help you determine if you’re sitting properly: * your feet are firmly on the floor, or on a foot rest, slightly in front of you * your seat is adjusted so that your thighs are parallel to the floor, with your knees at about 90 degrees and slightly lower than your hips * your seat allows your weight to be borne primarily on the upper half of your thighs * your knees are shoulder width apart or closer * your chair seat isn’t too deep (you shouldn’t be sinking in your chair) * you’re able to sit upright, maintaining the natural curves of your back * your back is adequately supported * your pelvis is neutral * your rib cage is elevated * you can draw a straight line down through your ear, shoulder, rib cage and pelvis (check this by sitting in front of a full-length mirror, or have a co-worker analyze your sitting posture) ERGONOMIC TIPS FOR COMPUTER USERS If you sit at a computer terminal all day, there are other factors you need to consider: * you should be sitting directly in front of your keyboard and computer screen * your monitor should be between 18 - 24 inches from your eyes, and you should have to look slightly down to see it * you should use a work surface that allows your elbows to maintain about a 90 degree angle * you should keep your shoulders relaxed; don’t slump forward * you should relax your wrists and keep them in a neutral position; don’t flex them up or down * while typing, keep your shoulders relaxed and your elbows loose at your side * take breaks When doing extensive computer work, it’s important to take brief breaks to stretch and walk around every 30 minutes or so. Alternate between work activities that utilize different muscle groups. Make sure to give your eyes a periodic break, too. For example, blink frequently, close them momentarily and gaze at different objects. THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHAIRS CASTER WHEELS In most work environments, and in nearly all offices, chairs are mounted on caster wheels to allow you to move from task to task easily. These wheels are usually mounted on a five-point base. STATIONARY BASE In some industrial settings, a chair with a stationary base is more common because of safety issues. Such chairs are often found in laboratories because the floors tend to be hard and smooth, making caster wheel chairs risky. Stationary chairs are the norm in assembly lines because they’re more stable. BENCH CHAIR Bench chairs are often used in small parts assembly areas in manufacturing, as well as for other jobs that require manual dexterity. Bench chairs are higher than typical office chairs and usually offer footrests for stability and comfort. SIT-TO-STAND CHAIRS Sit-to-stand chairs are best if you move from a seated to a standing position often during your shift (if you work as a receptionist or assembly line worker, a sit-to-stand chair would be a good choice). These chairs usually don’t have a backrest. the seat is angled downward, allowing you to lean comfortably in a half-standing position. OTHER FACTORS THAT AFFECT ERGONOMICS BACKRESTS The backrest of your chair should stabilize your pelvis and elevate your rib cage by supporting your lower back. If it doesn’t support your lower back properly, then it will sink into the backrest. A backrest that’s too soft, inclined, and/or concave causes this to happen. These faults result in a backrest that supports the wrong areas, which reinforces slumping. FOOTRESTS If your work surface is too high to allow you to place your feet on the floor, then you need a footrest. The footrest should be large enough to allow you some movement during the day. It should also be adjustable to accommodate your height and leg length. FIVE-POINT BASE A five-point base offers you maximum stability and can usually be found with any type of chair. HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT WORK CHAIR FOR YOUR BODY TYPE When shopping for a work chair, you must realize that one size doesn’t fit everyone. You must consider what you do at your chair all day, as well as take into account your physical size. Generally speaking, you want a chair that provides appropriate support to your back, legs, buttocks and arms. Here are the various components of a work chair and what to look for in them: THE BASE You want a chair that has a five-pedistal (point) base, regardless of whether you need casters (wheels). If you choose a chair with less than five pedestals, you’re sacrificing stability and safety (chairs with four casters can tip over more easily). Make sure the base allows the chair to swivel easily. ARMRESTS Keep in mind that armrests should only be used while reading or resting between typing sessions, NOT while actually typing or using your mouse. Depending on how you spend your time in the chair, you might not even need armrests. If you do get a chair with armrests, make sure they’re adjustable, broad, cushioned and comfortable. While seated, you should be able to independently adjust the height of the armrests and move them closer together or further apart. THE SEAT PAN The part of the chair that you sit in (the seat pan) should allow even weight distribution and comfortable support. Pay attention to the width and depth of the seat pan - it should be wide enough to give you at least one inch of unused space on both sides of your thighs and hips. It should also be deep enough to support your thighs comfortably and not put pressure behind your knees (that’s bad for circulation). The seat pan should feel comfortable even after sitting for an hour or more. Insufficient cushioning and poor contouring can cause hip and back fatigue, so ensure that the padding is of high enough quality to resist becoming permanently deformed. CHAIR HEIGHT You should buy a chair that allows you to adjust its height easily. The best chairs have a device that permits you to adjust the height of the seat pan while you’re seated (a chair with a spinning mechanical height adjustment mechanism is okay, too). Either way, make sure the adjusters are within easy reach while you’re seated - you shouldn’t have to get up to change the height of your chair. If more than one person will be using the chair, make sure the range of heights will accommodate all users. You should be able to adjust the height of the seat pan so that the fronts of your knees are level, or slightly below level, with your feet firmly on the ground or on a footrest. LUMBAR SUPPORT A good lumbar support (the part of the chair that supports your lower back) is essential. Many chairs have cushioned lumbar supports that can be adjusted up and down and forward or backward. That’s what you want, as these supports will better fit your shape. The ability to adjust your chair is especially important if more than one person will use the chair. A fixed-height lumbar support might be okay if you’re the only user of the chair and it feels comfortable when you sit back against it. When sitting against the lumbar support, make sure there’s sufficient room for your hips and that you aren’t being forced so far forward in the chair that you lose thigh support. BACK SUPPORT The back support should recline to allow you to sit back at more than 90 degrees. The best chairs allow your back to move and also track your back as you move back and forth. Try to avoid locking a back support in one position. Look for a support that’s sufficiently broad and doesn’t put pressure on the side of your back. The support should also be tall enough to provide good support to the middle of your back - at least up to your shoulder blades. HEADREST If you like to recline in your chair to read, talk on the phone or relax, look for a chair with a high back and good neck and head rest. PRICE Good chairs are coming down in price, but they can still be costly. You can get a good chair for between $300 and $500. (Remember this - you get what you pay for) While $300 to $500 (or more) may seem like a lot of money for a chair, if you’re among the millions of people who spend most of their workdays sitting, a high-quality, comfortable chair is a wise investment. Win Their Hearts, Not Their Minds

Monday, August 6th, 2007

By Christian Doyles Hey guys, Have you ever heard someone say that women are really emotional? Well, it’s true. And actually, everyone is very emotional… whether we like to believe so or not. We make emotional decisions and then justify our behavior with logic. Let me share something with you that happens nearly every time I’m out with my girlfriend… Whenever I go out with my girlfriend, guys always try to come up and hit on her. It’ll go really badly for them and at some point my girlfriend will tell them that I can help them get better success with women because I teach men how to meet and date women. The next thing I know, the guys are trying to convince my girlfriend that she shouldn’t be with me and that they are much nicer guys that she should be with. Then, they ask me for dating tips which they then try to use on my girlfriend. It’s pretty funny. I get a good laugh from it every time. And, it only makes them look like idiots and make her want to be with me more. This is why… No matter how much you beg, whine, try to convince or logically justify or rationalize to a woman why should she be with you, it won’t ever change her mind. She won’t ever say, “Hey, that really makes sense, I think I’m compatible with you!” This isn’t a cloning lab. You aren’t in a debate. You can’t say, “I have good breeding, a good job and high apparent intellect… I think we’d make good natural companions” and expect anything but her to look at you funny before she walks away creeped out. It’ll never work. Just like no matter how much a fatty tries to convince you that she’s hot and sexy, if you don’t have beer goggles on, she’ll still be nothing but a fatty. So, STOP TRYING TO CONVINCE WOMEN TO BE ATTRACTED TO YOU! So, how do you get a woman attracted to you if you can’t do it by convincing her logically? You do it through emotions. She has to feel emotionally drawn towards you. You have to do all the things that I’ve been talking about… be a challenge, tease her, be unpredictable, be interesting. That’s the only way you’ll make a woman feel attracted to you. If you walk up and a woman isn’t instantly attracted to you, you need to press her emotional buttons. You need to be different than every other guy out there who tries to convince her to be attracted to them. Let’s talk about a few of these things that create attraction so that you know what I’m talking about… Be a Challenge and teasing Hot women are used to men coming up to them, giving them anything they want and then agreeing with everything that a woman says. I’ve had girls crawling all over me just because I disagreed with what they said and had an argument with them. Hot girls are so bored with their life of guys doing anything for them that they want something new, some type of substance in their lives. Give it to them. Tease them about their clothes or their jewelry. Don’t be worried about offending them. Be Unpredictable Women have the same things happen every single time they go out. Before a guy even walks up, she knows exactly what the guy is going to say. And you know what? I do too! It’s probably going to be some compliment that she’s heard 7 times already tonight followed by buying her a drink that he’s going to force her to accept whether she wants one from him or not. After that he’s either going to try to come on to her so hard that she basically has to call security over or he’ll be so unbelievably nice to her that she’ll have to come up with an excuse like, “I have to go to the bathroom” in order to get away from him without hurting his feelings. Do something different. Be interesting, fun, exciting, challenging, engaging, cool and indifferent. Don’t let her know that you’re interested in her by busting her balls and showing her that her looks don’t impress you. Be Interesting Have you ever talked about your job, school, your car or your family? Stop it! I’m getting bored just thinking about it! Have something interesting to talk about at any time. Have a good story that you can tell if your conversation dies down. Take her somewhere that always has interesting things going on where you can talk about relevant things in the area. I like to go to shopping malls with crazy shops in them and try on really silly trendy clothing that you only see people on runways in fashion shows wearing. Read some books on comedy and have fun wherever you go. Do anything you can to be different than most guys and have a good time. A woman would rather be with a poor, funny, interesting guy than a rich, handsome, predictable guy any day of the week. Win their Hearts, Not their Minds. Tips For Installing And Maintaining Water Gardens

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

By Peter Finch Water gardens, also known as aquatic gardens and garden ponds, are miniature ecosystems. They add charm, enthusiasm and a sense of tranquility to any place. Water gardens can be created by combining a pool with aquatic plants and ornamental fish. Rocks, waterfalls etc when combined with pools add to the beauty of the gardens. Water gardens can be man-made or natural, comprising the right blend of flora (plants) and fauna (animals). Pond Plants Water gardens have plants such as submerged plants, marginal plants and floating plants. Submerged plants are those that grow completely under water. Marginal plants have their roots deep into the soil but the plant grows above the surface of water. Floating plants grow freely floating on the water surface. The submerged plants in the ponds often act as oxygenators and provide oxygen to the fish in ponds. A garden pond requires at least one oxygenator and a lily plant. Aquatic Animals Water gardens look colorful with fish like Koi, Gold Fish, Golden Orfe, Golden Tench, Mosquito Fish etc. Water ponds also attract snails, frogs and other predators. Some predators such as snakes can be dangerous to the fish in the pond. Requirements For Water Gardens There are certain points that need to be considered when installing water gardens. Some of them are - 1. Sunlight - Most water plants need enough sunlight to grow. Hence it is recommended to install the water pond at a place where there is enough sunlight. In case of shadier places, the choice of plants is limited. 2. Trees - Having a water pond near a tree is not preferable. The dried leaves from the tree may fall into the water and harm the aquatic plants and animals. 3. Location - The location of a garden pond should be such that it can be easily viewed and enjoyed. It is recommended to install it in places near the windows or in places easily viewable from the terrace etc. 4. Size - Size of the water garden should suit the size of the garden. A small garden will not look good with a large water pond. Maintenance of A Water Garden Since the garden ponds contain plants and animals living in them, just creating water gardens is not enough. They require regular maintenance. Maintenance of ponds includes filtering the water, pumping, preventing the formation of algae etc. Equipments Used For Maintenance Of Water Gardens Pond Pumps - Pond pumps provide water enriched with oxygen to the plants and animals in the pond. While choosing a pond pump do consider the operating cost of the pump as well along with the pump cost. Pond Filters - Pond filters mainly function to filter the water in the pond. Fish and other aquatic animals living in water pollute the water due to their regular metabolic activities. If the impurities are left behind, the water gets polluted thereby causing harm to the plants and animals in the pond. Ultraviolet clarifier - Ultraviolet clarifier (UVC) is used to prevent algae that result in green murky water. The algae remove the oxygen from pond water and hence may cause death of fish in the pond. UVCs are usually included in most pond filters. It is important to note that UVC contains quartz tubes since that doubles the efficiency of the UVC. With proper planning and maintenance, water gardens can be your source of joy and pride.
